A History of Christ First Covina

Rooted in Faith since 1896.

Our Story

It all began with a trolley car.

Before 1896, an “Evangel Car” rolled into Covina, pulled onto a siding, and opened its doors for worship services. Chapel cars were a powerful evangelistic tool in the West, fully equipped with pews, hymnals, Bibles, a pump organ, a pulpit, and even stained-glass windows. Week after week, families gathered inside that railcar, building relationships and growing in faith.

Over time, those who met there longed for something more permanent—a church family. Mr. W. Q. Custer, owner of Custer Christiansen Mortuary, partnered with Reverend E. G. O. Groat, then pastor of a church in San Dimas, to begin a Sunday school. On March 15, 1896, twenty-four people gathered in Covina’s public school building to organize the First Baptist Sunday School of Covina.

That faithful group of twenty-four led to the founding of our church on November 17, 1896, followed by incorporation on May 24, 1897. Just two days later, a lot was purchased for a chapel, and on October 3, 1897, the building was dedicated.

In 1970, the preschool began with just 14 students. Today, it is licensed for 89 and continues to provide quality, developmentally appropriate programs that meet the ever-changing needs of young children and their families.

Over the years, there have been many transitions—pastors, ministries, building campaigns, and seasons of change—all shaping the church into what it is today. Remarkably, we still gather on the original land purchased by those first faithful members.

Most recently, after a devastating storm and major flooding damaged the church, the congregation came together to fully renovate the main facility. While updating systems and addressing deferred maintenance was important, honoring the character and spirit of the church was the highest priority. Though the colors have changed, the Worship Center still feels like home. The Fellowship Center was refreshed to align with the rest of the building, thoughtfully bridging the gaps created by earlier additions and partial renovations.

Through all these years, one thing has remained constant: people have come here to encounter God, and He has welcomed them with open arms. Gospel seeds have been planted. Decisions have been made for Christ. Lives have been transformed. Our church has become a vital part of the city of Covina, and it continues to be a place where everyone belongs—whether walking closely with God or just beginning to seek Him. Here, people experience His Word taught practically, His love shown generously, and His grace lived out in authentic community.

From Then to Now

We could not have gotten here without the faith of those who have gone before us.
